Since 1983 "THEFT TALK" has been a nonprofit counseling agency. "THEFT TALK" provides specialized group counseling to adult and juvenile theft offenders, victim services and professional training. Group sizes range from six to fifteen, and average from eight to ten. For a variety of reasons we use a brief therapy, structured, high impact model. Most clients receive three to four hours of group counseling in one session, and pay a fee for this service. The agency is funded, almost exclusively, on a fee for service basis.
The following describes "THEFT TALK's" employment opportunities:
You could be a "THEFT TALK" Employee. (Details are outlined below.)

"THEFT TALK" Employees:
1) Employees: "THEFT TALK" has four classifications of employees. A) Full-time employees work on salary and perform for 40 hours a week. B) Half-time employees work on salary and perform for 20 hours a week. C) Part-time employees work by conducting individual counseling sessions and are paid a wage and/or commission for each session conducted. D) Commissioned employees. Traveling is typically required.
2) Pay: Part-time employees are categorized as: a) "Part-Time Trainee", b) "Trained" or c) "Senior Counselor". Pay scales are different for each category. A trainee is paid the least. Once trained, (able to conduct a group without another counselor present), part-time counselors are paid substantially more. Senior Part-Time counselors receive additional pay.
3) Training: It usually takes a new "THEFT TALK" counselor about three months (yes, 3 months) to be trained. This process is not an easy one and, in fact, proves to be difficult for most of those who have experienced it. We have a training manual, training videos and a training outline. Trainees start by "observing" groups and eventually progress to "co-counseling" in a session with a trained counselor. Later, a trainee will conduct about ten "private" sessions before being allowed to conduct a group session. Once a trainee has progressed to conducting group sessions on his/her own, the trainee is observed and provided oral and written feedback after the session has ended. Each trained counselor receives a document declaring him/her a Certified "THEFT TALK" Counselor.
4) Hours of Work: "THEFT TALK's" Counseling services are offered on weekdays and evenings, Saturday mornings or afternoons. A calendar of available group dates is circulated among counselors and according to seniority. Counselors sign up to conduct the sessions which are preferred and/or available. Counselors are expected to be available for work on evenings and Saturdays. Evening and weekend work includes a pay differential. Our counseling schedule is typically completed a four months in advance. Of course a counselor would not be expected to work every night or weekend. Most counselors expect to be scheduled to work two to three times a week.
5) Philosophy: "THEFT TALK" has a very specific approach which focuses heavily on personal responsibility for each choice we make - taking control of our lives and our future. We reject the majority of the causal models which attempt to explain criminality as "caused" by social, environmental or psychological trauma. In our practice, (for our clients' issues), we also reject the Systems Approach which, in or view, dilutes our personal responsibility message. The interpretative and/or interpersonal psychodynamic approach is also seen as having the same adverse effect with this population. We use an impact model which culminates into a counseling/education approach. Theoretically we are quite cognitively oriented. We align most closely to a combination of Reality Therapy, cognitive behavior modification, Rational Emotive Therapy and Stanton Samenow's "thinking error" model. Our mission is to "Change the Way People Think About Stealing". Our primary intervention is Cognitive Restructuring oriented.
Our sessions generally contain the same material. There is a strict outline of issues for the sessions. In spite of the outline, each session is typically quite different, counselors need to be able to cover the same material each time and yet respond in hundreds of different ways - depending upon the group make up.
Sometimes it is helpful to characterize our work by comparing it to a first grade teacher. Each year the teacher has to teach very elementary skills such as the alphabet or counting from "1 to 2 and so on". As elementary as the lessons are for the teacher they are both complex and necessary lessons for the young student. Our counselors are placed in a very similar position. Each group has a very consistent and simple message sent. These messages may seem simple to the counselor but are likely complex for a new client.
6) Our Office: "THEFT TALK" employees are heavily supervised when being trained- we regularly come to you. However, once trained we would expect you to be a competent professional who is dependable, responsible and needs very little supervision. Once trained we expect you to come to us if you have questions, problems or concerns. We have regular Monday staff meetings and monthly counselor training meetings which counselors are free to attend as they wish.
7) In order to be employed with "THEFT TALK" you must be respectful of other people, cultures, races and religions, be a U.S. citizen and have a valid drivers license.
Once employment résumé's have been received they are reviewed and the selected candidates will be asked for a first interview. Finalists typically see a group session before the final interview with the Director and/or Executive Director.
